A special lecture "To become familiar with cultural property" at Hachigaoka junior high school (Kyoto City)
~High-resolution facsimile of “Eight-Planked Bridge” by Ogata Korin/ Virtual Reality of Gold Pavilion and Silver Pavilion~

On November 2, Kyoto National Museum and the Kyoto Culture Association together held a special lecture, using the high-resolution facsimile of “Eight-Planked Bridge” by Ogata Korin, the original work is owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, for 230 seventh grade students, among 6 classes, of Hachigaoka junior high school in Kyoto. The teacher Dr. Mizutani, an associate fellow of Kyoto National Museum, explained about the screens and the artist with the support of volunteers: Cultural Property Sommelier. Those sommeliers, who were arts students of university and graduate schools in Kyoto, assisted the lecture by showing children structure of the screens and materials for making the screens. In addition, with the support of TOPPAN PRINTING CO., LTD., there was a lecture using the Virtual Reality of Gold Pavilion and Silver Pavilion. At the lecture, the lecturer Mr. Kumagaya, a graduate student of Kyoto Institute of Technology, explained children about buildings and gardens of both temples by showing Virtual images of pavilions.

Cultural Property Sommelier wanted!

Learning support program for elementary and junior high school students: using high-resolution facsimiles of cultural properties as leaning materials
“Cultural Property Sommelier” application information

<Purpose>
Kyoto National Museum and Kyoto Culture Association launches the “Learning support program for elementary and junior high school students: using high-resolution facsimiles of cultural properties as leaning materials” to offer children opportunities to be more familiar with Japanese cultural properties and to raise their interests on those assets. Those who learn art history at university and graduate schools and who satisfy requirement for “Cultural Property Sommelier will visit elementary and junior high schools in Kyoto to lead a lecture about cultural property using digital reproductions of cultural properties. Before start teaching, there will be schooling for sommeliers, which will be led by an associate fellow of Kyoto National Museum.

<Detail>
  We seek university or graduate students who are able to participate in the project from next spring. The schooling will start at the end of October 2009, and teaching at elementary and junior high schools will start in April 2010. There will be gratuity for activities.

<Application requirements>
  The requirements for the application are as follows:
・Students of university or graduate schools in Kyoto, who also will be enrolled next year
・Who has or had taken Japanese Modern Art History class
・Whose university or graduate schools must be campus members of Kyoto National Museum
・Who will be able to participate schoolings once a month (Monday)

  Starting from August 2009 Deadline October 10, 2009

<Schooling>
  Period: From October 19, 2009 through the end of March 2010
Two-hour session for once a month (Monday)
       Total of five schoolings
・The first schooling: October 19 (Mon), 1pm~3pm at Kyoto National Museum
・The second schooling: November 2(Mon), 1pm~3:15pm at Hachigaoka junior high school
       ※The third and following schoolings will be informed later
  Place: Kyoto National Museum (except the second schooling)
  Teacher: an associate fellow of Kyoto National Museum
  Content: lecture about cultural properties; teaching methods etc.

A special lecture ”To become familiar with cultural property” at Kinkaku elementary school (Kyoto City)
~ Virtual Reality of Gold Pavilion and Silver Pavilion~

On August 27, with the supports from Kinkaku and Ginkaku temples, TOPPAN PRINTING CO., LTD., and Kyoto Culture Association held a special lecture, using Virtual Reality of Gold Pavilion and Silver Pavilion, for 150 sixth grade students, among 4 classes, of Kinkaku elementary school in Kyoto.
The teacher, Dr. Nakamura, a professor emeritus of Kyoto Institute of Technology, showed children temples and their gardens and explained about them. Children were excited especially when they virtually entered to the pavilion, which was not open to the public. Seeing places where people usually cannot access is an appealing point of learning with Virtual Reality. During lunch time break, students enjoyed controlling a console of Virtual Reality.

A special exhibition of high-resolution facsimiles at Matsumoto City Museum

There will be one month special exhibition of high-resolution facsimiles from August 1 (Sat) through August 30 (Sun) at Matsumoto City Museum.
The exhibition is organized by Kyoto Culture Association and Matsumoto City Museum, and displays 9 facsimiles of cultural properties, which have been created by the Association.
The facsimiles displayed are as follows:
“The Wind and Thunder Gods” by Tawaraya Sotatsu (original work: National Treasure)
“Dragon and Tiger” by Kano Sanraku (original work: Important Cultural Property)
“Pine Trees” by Hasegawa Tohaku (original work: National Treasure)
“Landscapes in Moonlight” by Soga Shohaku (original work: Important Cultural Property)
“Hokoku Festival” (right wing) by Kano Naizen (original work: Important Cultural Property)
“Flowers and Birds of the Four Seasons” by Kano Motonobu (original work: Important Cultural Property)
“Namban Screens” by Kano Naizen (original work: Important Cultural Property)
“Eight-Planked Bridge” by Ogata Korin
“Scenes in and around Kyoto. Uesugi version” by Kano Eitoku (original work: National Treasure)
Total of 9 facsimiles
The original works of those facsimiles are rarely displayed so please visit our exhibition.

A special lecture ”To become familiar with cultural property” at Kinkaku elementary school (Kyoto City)
~High-resolution facsimile of “Scenes in and around Kyoto. Uesugi version” by Kano Eitoku~

On June 17, Kyoto Culture Association held a special lecture, using the high-resolution facsimile of the National Treasure “Scenes in and around Kyoto. Uesugi version” by Kano Eitoku, for 160 sixth grade students, among 4 classes, of Kinkaku elementary school in Kyoto.
As a special guest teacher, Dr. Mizutani, an associate fellow of Kyoto National Museum, explained about the screens and materials artist used, such as natural mineral pigments, gold leaf and hide glue. After the lecture, each class had appreciation time and then, students reported their impression and what they found from the screens. In case of the original work, people usually could appreciate it through glass cases, however, a facsimile of the National Treasure allowed the students to observe the screens very closely. They enjoyed the scenes depicted in the screens such as Kinkaku temple, Mt. Kinugasa and Gion festival.

High-resolution facsimile of a National Treasure “Blue Acala with two attendants” was dedicated to Shorenin in Kyoto (Higashiyama)

Kyoto Culture Association had created a high-resolution facsimile of a National Treasure “Blue Acala with two attendants”, known as one of the three major paintings of Acala in Japan, and dedicated it to Shorenin. At Shorenin, the original work, which has never been exhibited, will be displayed from September 18 through December 20. After the special exhibition, the high-resolution facsimile will be displayed instead of the original.

Stage 2, Donation Ceremony and Special Exhibition

There will be a donation ceremony and a special exhibition of completed high-resolution facsimiles, created upon the Tsuzuri project: Cultural Heritage Inheritance Project, which was launched by the Kyoto Culture Association and Canon Inc. The ceremony is held at the headquarters of Canon Inc., at 2pm on March 16, 2009.
The works completed in Stage 2 are as follows:

“Landscapes of the Four Seasons” by Sesshu
“Flowers and Birds of the Four Seasons” by Kano Motonobu
“Namban Screens” by Kano Naizen
“Landscapes in Moonlight” by Soga Shohaku
※Please note that the ceremony is only opened for invited guests

NPO Kyoto Culture Association has launched its web-site

Kyoto Culture Association has taken over the digital archive project of cultural properties from Kyoto International Culture Foundation. The change is due to the amendments of the Law and by this change, the Association will be able to concentrate more on digital archiving projects.
We sincerely ask your understanding and support on our projects.
